An article suggested that Surface Design is an emerging curriculum area in art schools and in art education for that matter, bridging the the subjects of graphics, product design, textiles, and Fine Art. One can see the merging of these distinct educational disciplines in contemporary design trade shows with a market for the amalgamation. Surface Pattern can be considered the printed element of textiles.

A master Pattern Artist/Craftsperson I deeply admire is Englishman, William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement. It was into this historical situation that he and other English reformers stepped.
Morris, the son of a successful businessman, could find no good designs and was utterly disheartened by the ugliness and vulgarity of the products available. He determined to set an alternative example. In 1861, at the age of twenty-seven, he opened a seven member firm, Morris and Company, whose goal was to produce finely designed, handcrafted products. Within the scope of Morris's medeival style guild-workshop ideal, artists and craftspersons would cooperate to create decorative and functional art, well made and beautiful. The range of work of decorative and useful art produced by Morris and company was extraordinary : mural decoration, stained glass, decorative tiles, architectural carving, metalwork including jewelry, ceramics, weaving, and embroidered textiles, wallpaper, fabric design, and furniture, and by the 1890's, the printing of artistic books. Though they advocated no single style, they adhered to general moral aesthetic imperatives- handcraftsmanship, respect for materials, simplicity, and restraint. Within these broad parameters, the artist craftsperson was encouraged to bring personal expression to the medium : As for Morris in the group of individuals, wallpaper, fabric, and tile design was his focus. In terms of the impact his body of work has had on me, I am extremely captivated by not only his numerous organic motifs constructing wonderful patterns, but the way they are situated compositionally and the buildup of surface. I, like Morris have a style of filling most of the picture plane with objects, or every vestige of the layout with forms leaving very little, if no negative space at all, which in turn can make the viewer examine designed fragments/full sized shapes at close range everywhere within the work from left to right and top to bottom. I also thrive on the principles of adjusting various sizes of shapes and employing overlap and underlap. Color harmony- we both make use of is of variety, from forms of a brilliant stand out luminosity to a more subdue pallette of choice.
